New Addington....To Buy or Not To Buy?!

As a first time buyer, hubby and I are looking to buy a house in Croydon. We have been living here for 5 years, and despite what people say, we think it is an ok area to live.
Easy commute, green area, all the shops you need.

Looking at house prices, New Addington gives you "a lot more house" for your money than Croydon towncentre or South Croydon for example. I know the area has been slashed and defended. But I would like to know your honest opinion...is it smart to buy in New Addington? If yes, what area would you recommend and why? What area is to be avoided?
If no, tell me why not (but only if you can seriously justify your comment).

I know that many areas in London have a bad reputation, and I can give you plenty of examples or where we do not want to live...But New Addington looks attractive to us, there is so much green around and we really are wondering, is it really really THAT bad?
